If you’re a parent or caregiver, you are familiar with the struggles of potty training. Getting a child to poop in the potty can feel impossible because there’s only so much one can do to “help” them. As a result, I have a constant flow of inquiries in my inbox from parents, grandparents, teachers, and therapists seeking help with bowel training for a child in their lives. In fact, when my kids were little, I struggled to bowel train all 3(!) even though I was an expert.

Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand the unique challenges that families face and the difference the right support and tools can make. I’ve even had children ask me to “help” them make their poop come out. In addition to my initial clinical training, I’ve had to develop numerous strategies to successfully train hundreds of children.

One common strategy is to cut a hole in a diaper or pull on training pants, but it only occasionally works. It’s super messy to do because all of the disposable absorbent material comes out and sticks to everything. Also, some kids will not wear it because it looks so different and is less comfortable. However, I continued to use this strategy until one client’s grandma suggested cutting a flap in the back of her 10-year-old grandson’s pull-on training pants. I tried it, and it worked! I tried it with other clients, and it worked with them too.

After multiple successes with the altered disposable training pants, I began making reusable training underwear with a flap.
